ABOUT CHE

I’ve always come back to guitar.

I’m Che Metcalfe, the guitarist and teacher behind Guitarso in Greenvale, Victoria.

THE BEGINNING

It started with a guitar.

I started playing guitar when I was seven. By fourteen I was playing in bands, and at seventeen I was teaching around 40 students as well as teaching guitar in schools.

THE BAND YEARS

Playing with other people.

In my early twenties I spent time working professionally as a musician. I loved playing live, but I was just as fascinated by what happened behind the music — recording, producing, experimenting with sound and learning how all the pieces fitted together.

A LIFE WITH MUSIC

Guitar never really went away.

Then life took me in a different direction. I studied building design, started my first business making mobile games, and eventually went on to build businesses including Uniti and Rumi on Louth.

I’ve kept playing, recording and making music throughout my life. Now I’m returning to something I loved doing when I was young: helping someone else discover how much fun it is to play.

That’s what Guitarso is about.

WHY I TEACH THIS WAY

Learn guitar by playing guitar.

One thing I’ve learned from playing and teaching is that guitar can become complicated very quickly if you let it.

There is always more theory to learn, another technique to master and another musician who can play something you can’t.

None of that should matter when you’re beginning.

I want a new student to make a sound, play a riff, learn a chord and experience what it feels like to make music with someone else as early as possible.

Theory matters. Technique matters. But I think they make much more sense when they explain something you’ve already heard, felt or played.

Guitarso starts with playing. The rest grows from there.

CHE & SOPHIE

Music is something we share.

Some of my favourite musical memories aren’t performances or recordings. They’re simply moments spent making music with other people.

YOUR STARTING POINT

A first lesson. A place to begin.

I’m not interested in showing a beginner how much I know.

I’m interested in helping them discover how much they can already do — and then building from there, one manageable step at a time.

If you’ve never played before, that’s exactly where Guitarso begins.
